If you’ve ever felt like you and your team are speaking different languages, even when you’re in the same room, you’re not alone. As business owners, managers, and team leaders, we know that getting the “people” side of business right is crucial for growth, engagement, and long-term success. But understanding what makes people tick, and how to bring out their best, isn’t always straightforward.

That’s why for over a decade, we’ve integrated the Everything DiSC® methodology into many of our leadership, individual, team, and culture development programs at Success Through People. Why? Because it works. DiSC gives business leaders practical, actionable insights into themselves and their teams; insights that can transform communication, boost team cohesion, and drive real business results.

Everything DiSC is a research-backed behavioural assessment tool designed to help people understand themselves and others better. Rather than putting people in boxes, DiSC provides a language for understanding different work styles and preferences. It’s built around four core behavioural styles:

  • D – Dominance: People with this style tend to be direct, results-oriented, decisive.
  • i – Influence: People with this style tend to be outgoing, enthusiastic, lively.
  • S – Steadiness: People with this style tend to be patient, accommodating, dependable.
  • C – Conscientiousness: People with this style tend to be analytical, precise, systematic.

Of course, the reality is that most of us are a blend of styles, though everyone tends to have a leaning towards one of the 4 core styles. DiSC doesn’t judge, and there’s no “best” style. Rather, it helps us see the strengths and potential blind spots in ourselves and those we work with.

DISC circumplex

In small and medium business environments, every person’s contribution is amplified. Misunderstandings, mismatched communication styles, or clashing work preferences can quickly ripple through a team, impacting everything from daily operations to staff retention.

To bring this to life with a real-world example, we previously worked with the owner of a small professional services firm who felt his team just didn’t “get him.” He was frustrated by what seemed like constant miscommunication and a lack of buy-in. After running a DiSC program with him and his team, we discovered something simple but powerful: his natural work style was almost the complete opposite of his team members’. While he was direct, fast-paced and focused on results (a classic “D” style), his team prioritised steadiness, reliability and a focus on the finer details (“S” and “C” styles). They were speaking different “workplace languages,” and it was holding everyone back.

Through the DiSC process, the team gained a shared understanding of each other’s styles. They learned to flex their communication and adjust their expectations. The result? Sharper communication, improved team cohesion, and measurable improvements in performance. The owner finally felt heard, and his team felt understood.

Here’s why DiSC is so valuable for SMEs:

  • Self-Awareness: Leaders and team members gain clarity about their own strengths, motivators, and stressors.
  • Improved Communication: Teams develop a common language, reducing misunderstandings and friction.
  • Stronger Relationships: Understanding and valuing differences builds trust and respect.
  • Enhanced Leadership: Leaders learn to adapt their approach to get the best from every team member.
  • Better Business Outcomes: When people work better together, productivity, engagement, and client satisfaction all improve.

In our experience, DiSC is especially powerful because it’s practical. The insights aren’t theoretical; they’re immediately useful in everyday business life, whether you’re giving feedback, managing performance, navigating change, or just trying to communicate more effectively with a work colleague.

At Success Through People, we believe that sustainable business success relies on effective communication at both the individual and team level. That’s why DiSC is frequently a cornerstone of our approach. It’s also a great tool for building leadership capability, one of the eight core components of the Success Through People Model. By using DiSC profiles, coaching, and targeted training, we help SME leaders create high-performing, engaged teams that are primed to achieve results.

In the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at each of the four DiSC styles; Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness. You’ll learn what drives each style, how to spot them in yourself and others, and practical strategies for working together more effectively.
